Hi Donna and Margo,
Thank you for your thoughts. I, myself, am suprised at how many people I know who
work in and around the World Trade Center. There are 8 people from my office with
either husbands or children who work there. I have a cousin, who was also in the
building when it was bombed several years ago. She is fine. My stepmother has both a
nephew and a great-neice who work there. We just heard from the last 2 that they are
okay (it took til 5 pm for them to get word to their families since they were put on
buses and sent to Staten Island.) But the news for many others is not so good, and of
course living in a town 20 minutes to Manhattan we have such a high commuter
population. I have not spoken with any friends or neighbors other than the ones in my
office to know their situations. After sitting in my house all morning my manager
called to suggest I come to the office just to be with one another. She had ordered
some food and they had brought in a television. Before going there I took a ride to a
neighborhood
high on a hill with a better view of Manhattan. There were other cars stopped on the
street. When I pulled over, I sat staring with some tears streaming down my face and
a total stranger came over to my car to ask if I was okay. I said that I was and he
just gently touched my arm and walked away. There is a division of my company that
occupies 20 floors in the World Trade Center. After the first explosion a friend of
mine was called by her boss from his cell phone and he said that they were above the
crash and were told to stay where they were. To the best of my knowledge none of them
have been heard from. There was one man who did walk down to his wife's office and
then managed to get out (from above the crash) but for whatever reason left his wife
in her office and she has not been heard from.
There is also a list member, usually a lurker, who was in her office 2 buildings away
and when evacuated was on the street "with body parts everywhere." She was on the
street when the 2nd plane crashed and hopefully, she is fine. We do not know the
contents of some sort of white powder that was found on the ground and hope it is
nothing to worry about.
We are all praying for those with "not such happy endings."
Phyllis
