Dear Listers,
Im in NYC, close to the United Nations. Was without online
service from Tues. night til a short time ago and just finished reading all
the messages that had come in since then. Want to express appreciation for
the support and condolences coming in from all over the world. Thankfully
those I know personally who worked down there (World Trade) are ok, but I
know people who have lost colleagues, the number still uncounted. As of
yesterday, a shift in the wind has brought us the unmistakable acrid smell
of devastation.
My husband went two days in a row to donate blood (mine isnt
accepted for medical reasons) and was turned away both times due to the
tremendously heartwarming outpouring of help offered by fellow New Yorkers.
We believe donations of blood as well as volunteer-time, money and other
resources will be needed for a long, long time, and will continue to try to
do what we can, as we trust everyone else will all over the country -- we
all have reason to believe, on the basis of what Bush, Colin Powell, and
Donald Rumsfeld are saying, that this disaster is the beginning of months
and years of violence to come (probably intermittent).
Starting Tues. morning (when the first disasters struck here),
my Remy has demonstrated a new behavior from time to time, which I havent
seen before in his 18 months of life: growling into space (directed at the
ceiling, not at people), emitting ruffs of warning. This is completely
uncharacteristic. I do believe he has been able to sense something which is
terrible and completely foreign to him. I think this is partly (but I dont
think entirely) a sensitivity to my own internal state, even though
outwardly I have had to be very calm (as a psychotherapist I have been doing
a lot of crisis-counseling since Tues. morning, both in-office and over the
phone). My office is equipped with sound-proof windows, keeping the sirens
and occasional rumbles of patrolling fighter-planes from reaching human
ears. But we know dogs can hear and sense things we cant, possibly even at
a considerable distance. I wouldnt be surprised if many of us find that
our dogs, in addition to children and the rest of our friends and families,
need lots of extra hugs and reassurances.
I hope good news and miracles will bless our listers, their
families, our nation and our military.
Alida
