Hello, everyone;

Well, I have bad news again... I lost my little guy sometime in the
middle of the night. In all probability I lost him early in the evening, but I
just wouldn't put him down, I wouldn't give up on him. He was truly a
fading puppy....

I spoke at length with the vet this morning; we went over the check-list
of what I did, what I could've done, and what the possibilities were. We
both pretty much decided that I couldn't have done anything more to
save the baby, it was a fore-gone conclusion and it was out of my
hands. One suggestion (thanks for talking with me last night, Clicker
Carol!) was that, as is sometimes the case with large litters, maybe the
two babies hadn't received adequate nutrition in utero, and it just took
this long for it to show up with the boy. The vet concurred with that idea,
and suggested a few other possibilities that weren't as likely. It was
reassuring to be told that I'd done what I could, but ultimately it was out
of my hands. Dammit, Mother Nature can be a real bitch...!

I stayed up until about 3 with this little guy, but finally had to go to bed. I
carefully placed him amongst his siblings and went to bed. He
succumbed in the middle of the night. I cried for this one, too, not as
hysterically as when I lost the little girl, but it just hurts so much to lose
babies. I can't help but thinking that his death means that there is a
family that isn't getting the furry family member they were hoping for,
and that sends me off to new tears!

My stepbrother certainly didn't mean it unkindly, but yesterday, when
learning that we'd lost two puppies, made a comment about just how
much money had we buried... I'm sure he doesn't realize that the dog
breeders don't look at it quite that way, and I sure hadn't thought of it
until he said something, thank you very little...

Now every time one of the remaining healthy six babies squeaks I'm
over there in a flash, paranoid that something is going wrong. I know
that I worry! The six babies seem to be doing fine, though, gaining
weight and eating well. Temp is good, mum's milk is good, and they are
acting as 1 week old neonates should. <whew>

Thanks to everyone for responding to my query, I appreciate that you
took the time to offer ideas and support. But, pretty please, everyone
keep a few fingers or toes crossed for the six babies!!

hugs,
Sandra
