"We also thought that this might help get pupies of to a good start in new homes as it would be a familiar scent, appearance and feeling (dogs are quite sensitive about what is under foot) thereby being a better cue for pottying than an umfamiliar lawn...." Hilarie...I just don't think this is the case. Grass is grass and I have never seen puppies confused about that. That does not mean they won't have accidents, but they surely know where they are "supposed" to go. Since we are on this subject, I will share the rest of my housebreaking routine. I tell new owners not to let their puppies feet touch the ground for 3 days...as hard as that might be. They can hold them in their arms, sit on the furniture with them in their laps, or sleep with them in their beds. But when unattended they should be in their crates (unless eating)for 3 days. After going outside they can perhaps let them on the floor for 10 minutes, no more....then in your arms or in the crate. The reason for this is that after 3 days they get the idea....you go to the bathroom outside ONLY. If you get past the first 3 days with no accidents, you are 80% of the way home. If you let them have even one accident, you have undone all the work I have done before....so don't complain to me (I may sympathize but it is your fault, not the dogs.)Some listen, some don't. But the ones who do listen definitely have better trained dogs at much earlier ages. Most will tell me that the only accidents their dogs have are their fault....the owner was not paying attention to the dogs request to go out. Three day....it is just 3 days. Have your new buyers try it. By the way, it won't work in your house ... it will work in a completely new environment. Just 3 days!
