I posted the other day that Dinah had not been feeling well. She had a fever, and her red blood wells were 35%, down from 43% in June. She had baby red cells on the slide, so she is trying to make up for them. She is evidently slightly anemic.
Her platelets were high--651,000 on the computer, 20-25 per high power field. The vet ran tic titers, and they came back negative. She started her on Doxycycline in anticipation of a tic borne disease. She has rallied some since starting the Doxycycline. In researching platelets, the only thing I found was that they can be high from stress or an infection. She also took chest x-rays in case something was going on with her heart. She did an abdominal ultrasound to look for tumors. This may seem like overkill, but with Savannah we did the abdominal ultrasound last, and there were tumors everywhere. I couldn't stand not knowing this time. I have been researching this on the web. I have articles on Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, but the vet doesn't think this is what Dinah has. Her gums are pink, and the vet said with IMHA, the dogs go rapidly downhill, and this is not the case with Dinah. Does anyone have any theories at all? I asked the vet if she could be having a toxic reaction to Frontline. She didn't think so, but said that she would call the company tomorrow and ask if there had been any reported cases of anemia with the use of Frontline. I also asked if it could be a reaction to Anipryl, which she started taking after last blood work, which was just a few months ago. I also asked if it could be a reaction to the Antirobe that she has been taking five days a month to help with bacteria in her mouth. She also took it before and after recent teeth cleaning. I could not find anything on the web about toxic reactions to Frontline, and the vet looked in her info and it is not a side effect to Antirobe or Anipryl. Dinah had a rabies shot in September, and I read that IMHA can be a reaction to vaccinations. Since she doesn't think she has IMHA, she doesn't think it could be from the rabies shot, but said she would do further research on that. I just really want to know what this is so we can help her. She will be 13 years old in January, and this doesn't need to go on. She has rallied some, but still isn't acting completely up to par. I trust my vet completely, but thought that someone may have had a similar experience that could help with this. Please email me privately if you can help and don't feel this would be of interest to the list.
