Brigette I honestly don't know why they are called mules - it could possibly be a name that is used for them just in the Lake District where my friend lives although at the sheep sales they are advertised as "mules" Apparently that particular cross when crossed with the sheep in the south (still can't remember if it was Suffolk or Sussex!) produce the right amount of fat to lean meat ratio for export to Europe ( no longer I fear with the Foot and Mouth still be very active)
