Like Alida, I too have been forced out of lurkdom for this topic, and totally
agree with everyone's sentiment that there is something strangely not right
about this request. Since I am the director of a fairly large non-profit
museum, which survives in part because of donations of cash, goods and
services, everything about her written introduction/request is WRONG. Her
blatant statement that this donation is tax-deductible is wrong: the law
requires the statement read "deductible to the extent allowed by law" and
other more defining statements. Not all donations, even to recognized
charities, are tax-deductible. Much depends upon the exact circumstances of
the charity, the donation, the donor, etc.
Living things are not usually donated, except if they are going to a
known entity such as a zoo, rehab center, etc.
ANYONE can apply for a IRS letter and unfortunately it doesn't take
too much to get one. In NYS, anyone can also apply for a charities
registration number and it also is relatively easy to get.
This sure sounds like a cleaver, innovative new scheme to get a "free"
cavalier. The heart-'n-flowers routine is also suspect, especially at a time
like this when everyone is feeling a need to do something to help others.
I'm sooo fearful that some well-meaning person will actually take this
request on face value!!! My recommendation is to FLEE!
       Now back to lurking...
