Hi Alison: My girls muck around a bit whelping. Some early and some after day 61. My rule of operation now is: 1. make sure the bitch actually has puppies. 2. check that the puppies are still viable. 3. No discharge of yukky colour. 4. the mother is comfortable and not stressing too much. 5. if in doubt the vet can be visited to check the mother's health and the puppies. (I did this for my old girl who has just had her final litter - the vet confirmed that the mother was healthy and the babies were fine and we went home and waited). 6. Don't leave them alone during this time as the puppies can arrive at anytime. 7. Take the temperature. 8. Finally follow your instincts but make sure your instincts are not masked by "pure anxiety".
That's my list! Any modification from anyone would be welcome. I have a bitch who was due to whelp yesterday from her first mating and tomorrow from her second. My question is, If she does not whelp tomorrow, when should I start to worry? This is my 3rd litter, and both other times my bitches whelped early, so this was never an issue. Your experiences and knowledge are greatly appreciated.
