Hi, everyone; It was announced several days ago, but I'm just now deciding that I'm not disappointed, but rather that I'm angry about it! Okay, yes, we need to concern ourselves over the safety and well-being of our postal workers, and ESPECIALLY our armed services and fire/policement, but puh-leeeze, must we just roll up in a full fetal position and allow the terrorists to completely ruin our freedoms and passions? 20,000 people died last year because of the flu. 40,000 people died because of car accidents. I really don't mean to make light of the anthrax scare, it is terrifying. But, c'mon, if these terrorists wanted to do wide-spread damage they should've sent the flu bug to America, or bought new, fast cars for everyone!! The risk to the average person is miniscule, it truly is.
For those that love to travel for pleasure, dog shows, hobby horse shows, business.... are you really changing how you live because of fear? Caution is a prudent and admirable thing, but caving in to fear is not healthy. Allowing the terrorists to WIN through intimidation is a horrible thing. Our country (and many others) were not brought to this point in time and history by the faint of heart; we owe it to the sacrifices of our antecedents, and those of our neighbors', to live our lives as those people fought hard to allow us. Live life, don't just exist! And, as I ramble passionately on (yes, those of you who know me know I'm a fiery and passionate person!) I would like to beg you all for some ideas in this particular area. I have participated in "Operation Dear Abby" for several years, even getting my girl scouts, boy scouts, and 4- H kids involved. Might not have received a lot of responses, but we all felt that it was one small way we could bring a far-from-home soldier a brief respite, and a glimpse of normal life 'at home'; and for that it was worth the time to write the letters, stamp the envelopes, and cheerfully plop the small bundles into the post boxes. And what's YOUR part, you ask - DOES she have a point??? YES! Do you know of any overseas servicemen and woman? If so, would they be willing to play Santa's helper or Letter Carrier for people on their bases? Can we coordinate some kind of "thanks for doing this, we appreciate you" letter campaign? I'll volunteer to do as much as I can from my end, but I hate the thought of not sending out 20 or 30 letters this holiday season. Especially considering that our country is at war, don't these active duty people deserve a bit of our time to help them get away from their corner of the world, and share a bit of ours? Please say yes, please contact me with some ideas. I think that if we clearly mark our return addresses - maybe I'll put a picture of myself and my dogs (oops, that might scare people, maybe the children and dogs?) on the envelope so the postal and service people can see these are from us, the American people, and doesn't contain nasty virus or powder. Hmm, maybe dark envelopes? Or clear? <G> I shall now descend from the wind-blown (hot air, hmmm!) lofty place on my gilded, sudsing, pontificating rectangle.
