Cavalier friends: As I count my blessings this Thanksgiving season, I find my cavalier, Lizzie, and the joys of gardening near the top of my list. Both of my passions are celebrated in a delightful book, DOGS in their gardens, by Page Dickey.
The book quotes London landscape designer, Tim Rees, as saying, Dogs are the soft underbelly of every gardener. I couldnt agree more. While I work in the front garden of our tudor home ( yes, Kansas does have tudor architecture), Lizzie often collapses amidst hostas, heuchera and liriope underneath our big pin oak. More than one garden visitor has mistaken her for a real statue. Similar experiences are captured in the book by Dickeys marvelous photographs. Many breeds are featured, including the precious humane society blends. Cavaliers are represented by Mango, a London ruby owned by Tim Rees (quoted above) and Winston, a blenheim owned by Chotsie and Allan Blank. Winston is shown poolside between a hydrangea hedge and a metal sculpture somewhere on Cape Cod. Rosemary Powell, any chance you know Mango? Does anyone know, or better yet own, Winston? Both are excellent examples of our precious cavaliers. If you deserve a personal indulgence, or a dog lover on your gift lift this year deserves a special treat, I strongly recommend DOGS in their gardens. It found me strolling the aisles of a local Borders bookstore. Details follow so you should be able to access it at your favorite bookseller.
