Steve:

It is so heartbreaking to see them...

I think it very much depends on the dog, my Rufus only had to be drained
two or three times over several years, diuretics mainly kept him clear, but
I know of other Cavaliers who had to have this done much more frequently
(every month or so).

How long you give your girl I think depends on how ill she gets and how
much she wants to go on living; Rufus wanted to go on far longer than *I*
really wanted him to. He clung to his poor little life with all his might,
and the vet said let to him be - I would have put him out of what I
perceived to be his misery over a year before HE finally decided his time
had come. When that happened it was quite clear he could not go on much
longer: we would have taken him to be put down the next day if he had not
died of his own accord. I think you need to know your dog and heed what
they are saying to you: there is unfortunately no clear-cut answer.
