I have worked as an Ob/Gyn Nurse for 21 years and have worked in
infertility.
When I started with fresh chilled semen breeding, I was very happy to see
that they were doing LH testing. I have an excellent repro specialist
Melissa Goodman who through progestrone and LH testing has been almost 100 %
accurate in her prediction of when to breed a bitch. This is extremely
necessary when doing fresh chilled extended semen. You spend a lot of money
doing fresh chilled extend semen so you need to optimalize your chances.
Why rely on just progestrone when you can be 100% accurate with the LH
testing and see exactly when the LH surge occurs. After the rise, you breed
the bitch over the next five days. There are so many bitches that have
varied cycles(long and short) and you can be dealing with delayed luteal
phases, that for me the LH is the only way to go. With progestrone testing
along, you know after the fact. The rise in the progesterone can be long
and the LH surge somewhere inbetween. I have had great success with the LH
and the bonus is that my puppies always arrive on the specific due date
because I know when she conceived and I get at least 4 to 5 puppies in a
litter. In humans, we used FSH, LH, Serum Estrogen and progesterone (not
in that order) when doing infertility work-ups along with many other things
to enhance and induce ovulation and conception. My repro vet explains that
we do not yet know what turns on a bitches cycle, however they do know that
the preceding cycle does have a bearing on the next cycle. There is much for
science to uncover in canine reproduction but for me, if I cannot do a
natural breeding (which I prefer) and must to fresh chilled, I will use the
lastest technology to enhance my chances.
I guess, it is what you are used to and makes sense.
