Hi, List,
Some interesting points raised today in the cardiology session at the
expo. Dr. J. Ross (head of Cardiology at Tuft's) said in answer to my
question that a great number of puppy murmurs that are NON PDA murmurs
are either related to anemia, other nutritional problems or parasites.
He is talking about the so-called "innocent murmur" that goes away in a
few weeks or months. This was real news to me. He stressed anemia
(transient) as a major cause.
It was nice to meet Dr. Ross again; he was kind enough to do our recent
cardiology clinic at the CNE match.
We were shown a great way to palpate for obvious cardiac problems by
placing fingers between the intercostal spaces and feeling the
difference between the "lub" and "dub". I cannot describe it further in
words, but it is interesting.
A very detailed sesson on echocardiography and doppler was well done.
Other interesting tidbits, but since I can't flesh them out properly,
I'll only say that it was well worth while. In order to properly
describe some of the methods I will need to buy the proceedings book.
Behaviorist Nick Dodman in the "Ask the Expert" session I attended had
some great thoughts about OCD; he advocates behavioral fixes before
pharmacuetical ones. An interesting thought of his was to use a duck
call or a tuning fork just prior to walking away from an animal in whom
you wish to extinguish behavior. It seems to cue the animal that you
are NOT paying attention to him/her.
So much stuff to see and do. Tomorrow I am foregoing "Veterinary
Forensics" (sigh..<G>) for "common problems in the young dog" which
includes Brian Kilcommons speaking on "Responsible Selling; When to Say
No To What the Buyer Wants". On Saturday I had many choices to make
including "Therapy for Animals", Small Animal Dermatology" (still trying
to get rid of persistant otitis externa in one of my dogs), "Legal
Issues For Animal Care Givers", "Llama" (just kidding but there are so
MANY session tracks) to attend "Canine Reproduction And Neonatal
Health".
The Exhbition part of the Expo has some interesting booths as well. A
huge selection of things that are both veterinary and homeopathic, as
well as educational and rescue oriented.
There is also a theatre demo for SAR dogs, the Iams Mountain Lion, and
drug and arson dogs, etc.
It is lovely up here in New England; weather is gorgeous; some of you
should plan to come next year for this super expo.
