To whoever was asking, I do not believe the AKC has any rule about anyone turning dogs
in to shelters and/or to animal control. You breed 'em, you do what you want with
'em....
that's the only rule I know about. Now if the person of whom you were speaking is a
member of a parent club, the club may have such a rule....but he'd have to be proven
guilty.....and no American organization is ever going
to stop anyone from breeding.

Now, as to American type...and AKC judges, etc.
At a recent show in this area we had a major entry--something like 14 bitches. Most
of them were American bred. One of those was from a US kennel that has produced
dozens of club champions (and best in show winners) and
dozens of AKC champions, too...and group winners. It wasn't a very nice bitch, but it
was not the worst one...the worst one was imported from England. By a member of the
old club, I might add...and I have no doubt that it
will get its club championship. This import had a poor head, was not nicely marked,
didn't have much going for it at all, and at the time was "nekkid," that is to say,
dead out of coat. She was strategically unsound...her
entire rear assembly was out of whack...very straight in stifle, with a short, flat
croup, cowhocked to the extreme, and sickle hocked at the same time. The judge fell
in love with her and very nearly gave her the breed over
two decent specials, altho one of those was not properly groomed and looked dirty.
She did give this disgrace the major, however. Why? Who knows? The person who owns
the bitch wins in the club a lot and has made up
dogs...hers are quite mediocre, I think, but she's very visible.
The dog who took the breed was not well groomed and who was dirty. A different judge
did the group. Now here goes this dirty dog into the group ring...I will tell you he
has a gorgeous puss, eyes to die for, and can move as
well as any and better than most. Also he was happy. The group judge lost herself in
the dog's eyes and loved his face...she smiled when he moved...and he placed in the
group (in very nice competition, thank you). I
believe he could have won it if he'd been properly presented. This dog is by an
import out of a 2nd or 3rd generation American bred bitch.
No one can say (sorry everybody) that every judge at a club show does a good job,
or even always an honest job. Neither can one say that every AKC judge does a bad job
or a dishonest job. Judges in both venues often
know who is who and who has recently purchased what....(club) or who is who and who
has spent a quarter of a million dollars in advertising (AKC and, to some extent, club
show judges too). Not every judge is influenced by
their knowledge of these external things, but some are.
We do have AKC judges whose introduction to the breed was by people who were
promoting their own agendas. We also do have AKC judges who are trying to learn about
the breed and trying to do a good job (just a very few,
tho). The majority are just judging generically or by who's holding the
lead........sad, but true.
Still, if we have dogs out there that people are calling American type, then those
dogs are wrong. I think I see them but I don't call them AKC type or American type, I
call them poor quality, or pets.
Type is often very different in different countries...in the AKC we do not judge
dogs by the standards of the country of origin. If a breed tends to bring judges from
the country of origin, which is usually the UK
(Corgis, Labradors, most terriers, for example) but can sometimes be Australia because
Oz dogs in the breeds I've mentioned are pretty much the same as in the UK, the breed
tends to stay true and correct. When we start
having generic judges we start having generic dogs and losing the look...and not
always improving on it. Breeds originating in the UK and not looking anything like
ours are, among others, Cockers, English Springers, Goldens,
Collies, Shelties......and more. I'm not even going to address breeds from the
continent! And, when a breed gets too popular and is being bred by everybody and his
brother, there will be a lot of poor quality (I keep
reminding myself not to say bad dogs, but it's difficult).
No one should be breeding dogs of any kind without a goal in mind, and the goal
should have something to do with what look they're after, not with the idea of how
much they can win. If everyone who breeds Cavaliers had a
goal of establishing a particular look, they'd not be putting these plain, untypical
dogs in the ring. Any anyone who doesn't consider pedigree and find out what it
means, rather than just quoting a name, shouldn't be
breeding at all. There are an awful lot of people over here trying to line breed on
dogs they know nothing about, which is also not the mark of a high intellect!
