Unfortunately, bad breed type is the lament of good breeders in all breeds. There will always be "novice" breeders in every breed. Novice breeders can be breeder judges who still have never figured out how to produce a better more consistent dog. Watch dogs in all breeds, you don't have to be an expert in the standard to see dogs out in the ring that should be pets. Where did these dogs come from? Are they pets some one decided to show? Most likely they were sold as a show dog by a breeder who does not know the difference.
There will always be differing interpretations of a breed standard, but a good dog is a good dog in any venue. My first Australian Shepherd I showed finished very quickly the same year in both Aussie registries. He is just a good dog no matter where he is shown. He was not bred to be competitive in this venue or that. I feel the most important aspect in dogs is to be honest to yourself. If you need a judge to "tell you" that you have a good dog then maybe you should take the time to sit back and learn. Do not let yourself be convinced you have a good dog because a judge said so.
