Mycotoxins are a group of toxins produced by mold (fungus) that occur
normally in nature, so I guess it is theoretically possible to have an
animal poisoned by compost, particularly if you put grain products in your
compost. The molds that produce it have an affinity for nuts, grain
products, etc. There are several types; the one you hear the most about is
probably aflatoxin, as I think it is carcinogenic to humans, and so the FDA
requires random tests on grain products intended for human consumption --
there is a certain allowed level of aflatoxin. It is more of an acute
problem in underdeveloped countries with a high rice intake and poor food
handling methods -- eating moldy rice causes liver damage. I imagine that
it is the chemical imbalances due to liver failure that cause the seizures,
but I don't know that for certain -- it may just be the toxins' ability to
cause low blood pressure and shock, and the resultant hypoxia to the brain
that is the problem. Mycotoxins were used as biological weapons in
Afghanistan in the 70's.
