A friend of mine (no, honest, not me) recently whelped a bitch who had one
normal sized puppy followed by a very large puppy born back legs and tail
first. Size of pup meant he got stuck and after trying all she knew she had
to get the vet to remove the by then dead dog puppy. He was followed by a
very small pup, and subsequently a normal sized pup. Each pup had its own
placenta. So out of four in the litter, two were within normal size limits,
one huge,
one tiny. So I'm wondering what can cause such discrepancies in size in
whelps?
Anyone got any ideas/facts/useful information on producing a nice even size
of whelps in a litter?

Sheena,

I had a gorgeous black/tan female that I had shown and bred her last year.
Her water broke at about 8 pm and she was pacing, panting and nesting, but
not delivering. This was on a Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. I called
my vet at 10 pm and let him know what had happened and he said to bring her
down for X-rays. He saw two very small puppies, which he felt were out of
their sacks and one huge puppy that was in the sack. He felt that they had
all died or were very near death. I told him to rush them into surgery to
try to save them. Miraculously, all three came out alive but were one minute
from death. We ended up having a gorgeous huge blenheim female with a
thumbprint on her head we called her "Wonder Woman" and a little ruby boy
and a blk/tan female. All were thriving and doing well but due to my trying
too hard, I over fed the ruby with a bottle and he aspirated. I didn't know
how to feed properly and could kick myself because he was doing so well and
due to my inexperience lost him. It was really strange to see these two tiny
little whole colors and this enormous blenheim. But the blk/tan female
turned out to be a little spit fire. My vet has no idea what happened and he
is board certified from Auburn with a great deal of knowledge. It was just a
fluke I guess! By the way, I had her spayed due to geographic eye folds and
placed her as a therapy dog, which worked out wonderful. You can see her on
my website, "Portrait's Lady Diana."
