Yes, Jan, providing stud dogs is a lot of work...when done properly. And there are
some of us who keep bitches for a lot longer than you'd think, either because they
aren't ready to breed when they are here, or for
whatever reason...and for myself, I don't like to send bitches home (to owners who
have entire males on their premises...sort of a little insurance that the home boy
won't have a go with the girl after she's been
bred here) until they are out of season...so they tend to stay here longer than at
some places. Of course, if the owner has driven the bitch here and wants to leave
with her right after a breeding, that is the
owner's choice, but not my preference.
And Suze, yes, in the matter of stud fees, I think a dog who is a proven producer
should have a higher stud fee than a dog who is either a maiden or who has not yet
proven himself as a producer of quality. My point
was that people seem to ask the same stud fees here for dogs who are just beginning
their stud careers as they do for proven dogs--that sounds goofy to me. Any other
terms should be worked out between owners.
Sometimes the entire fee is due "up front," sometimes people want what is called a
"breeding fee," and will take no more if the bitch doesn't get puppies; some people
will wait till the bitch owner sells a puppy,
there are all kinds of arrangements, and there is no requirement that these be the
same for every breeding. Mr. Stud owner might let Joe Bitchowner use a dog and ask
for the entire fee upfront, while at the same
time agreeing with Patsybitchowner to wait for payment until the puppies are sold.
That is entirely fine, and the stud fees don't even have to be the same. Very often
friends don't charge one another anything like
they'd charge strangers......sometimes friends don't have to pay anything! It all
depends.
It was true at one time in many breeds that the average stud fee was equal to the
average cost of a pet puppy...we all know that is not the case in our breed at this
time. Some of the nicest dogs I know can be
used for a flat $500, other people say they are asking $1500........and there are
prices in between and, as you say, even higher.
It's all what the traffic will bear. On the other hand, I've known people to
quote a very high price when they didn't know any other way to tell the owner of the
bitch that the bitch was not welcome. I've also
known people keep a visiting bitch for a week and send her home unbred, because they
didn't like the bitch or for some other reason...and tell the bitch's owner the stud
fee was due when the bitch delivered her
puppies. All sorts of things go on......which is why you have to know the people
you're dealing with.
