Rachel, the Sony Cybershot DSCF707 is a serious camera with superb quality,
but to really utilize all its features you need to be able to use a 35mm
camera on manual settings. It has an "auto" focus setting, but you miss a
lot of the versatility of the camera if all you do is use "auto" focus. In
other words, one of their lower range Cybershots would work just as well if
you will not be using the manual focus options.

The DSC707 has auto focus, full manual focus, aperture focus (camera adjusts
speed to the aperture that you set), and shutter speed focus (camera sets
aperture to your speed setting), and a scene selection mode (twilight,
landscape or portrait)-- it will even take photos in the dark (nightshot as
in campfires or nocturnal animals or plants). In fact, I am seriously
considering taking the photography class at college so I can understand more
about manual settings.

After William gave me the camera, I realized that he had overbought for what
I needed and now I am intrigued by all the "bells and whistles" and view
learning how to use the camera as an interesting challenge. That is not to
say that anyone couldn't pick the camera up and make superior photos--- they
can, but if all you want is a good "point and shoot", a Cybershot 707 is
overkill. The camera costs $1, 000--- plus $400 if you buy all the extras
(carry bag, 128mb memory stick, tripod, floppy disk adapter, and extra lens)
and you can buy one of the 4.1 megapixel Cybershots for $800 and a 3.3
megapixel for $600. So it all depends on what you want to do. If you are
"into" photography, by all means get the 707, you'll love it. If you just
want ease of use and a good photo, buy the 4.1 megapixel Cybershot. It will
give you what you want and some extras without "bells and whistles" that
you'll never use. I love Sony's and can't imagine buying any other brand of
camera.

All the best,
Susan Cochran
