Imports do have to be chipped or tatooed before the AKC will register them.

Now that DNA testing is widely available, I'm not certain if the AKC has officially 
recognized it yet as one of the means of ascertaining a positive ID on a recently 
imported dog seeking AKC registration. When I imported my dog last year I voluntarily 
had his DNA done, but as per the AKC's instructions I also had him microchipped.

Under Special Registration Services (which can be seen on the AKC's website), Section 
1, Article G  states as a prerequisite to AKC registration that: "...the dog has been 
positively and permanently identified (microchip or tattoo) prior to being registered."
