Dave, you really nailed it. I couldn't agree more. I would like to suggest that perhaps one of the main reason that judges to fail to judge dogs is because there is such a desire for judges to try to get more and more breeds.
No one can be truly knowledgeable about hundreds of breeds, but some judge that many. What is there to rely on to make a good decision? Ads, faces, and Joining the "Big guys." Lets say you are judging Lakeland Terriers and into the specials ring comes Eight entrants. One of the dogs is handled by Peter Green and the other handlers you do not know. You think..."Oh, there is Peter Green, the renowned terrier man. He must have a good one." You will not feel comfortably dumping his dog unless you are very knowledgeable in Lakelands and can see that another is really better. Try Pat Craig Trotter in Elkhounds, Ed Jenner in Pekes, or Damara Bolte in Basenjis.
