Hi Pat,
The different rules I wrote about was relative to the CKCSC shows. My post
was in response to a question by Cindy Roof asking if it was not against the
rules of the club to socialize with judges and I responded that in some
regions it is and in some it is not. In this particular instance, I am not so
sure that being part of a discussion group qualifies as pre-show
socialization and I assume that dogs who will be exhibited will not be in
attendance and the other group members will simply share a public platform.
I was not going to comment about this particular topic since I am someone who
does exhibit in the CKCSC and will abide by the rules that are established
and not fault either other exhibitors or judges who socialize in areas where
it is allowed. However, since your post was addressed to me and "here I am"
I will take this opportunity to address some comments made about other clubs
practices both in the US and overseas and say that there is a difference
between a judge being invited to a dinner or a seminar prior to judging, when
every other exhibitor is also welcome, and a judge going to a private dinner
that is carefully choreographed so as to avoid being discovered by others.
In England most shows are one day shows and everyone arrives at the showsite
and goes home. Likewise most AKC shows unless your are a professional
handler. In the CKCSC we spend weekends together (some arriving on Thursday
and staying til Monday) and the opportunities for private socializing are
greater. To switch topics only slightle, the Northeast region also has
another rule that I think is one that should be adopted by other regions and
that is the rule that since the club pays for the judges to come to the
shows, no members "own" the Judge on Sunday nights. That means that anyone
who wants to have dinner with the Judges after the shows are over are invited
to join the group. That policy helps create the type of atmosphere I
personally attend CKCSC shows to be part of. That means (if I need to be
more specific) that no exhibitor, whether it is their first show or their
50th, will be left alone in their hotel room while the "in crowd" has a jolly
evening with the Judges. I wish all the regions would adopt that
policy.....we would all benefit.
