I agree, only in part with you on this. Thankfully, I think this happens in
only a minority of the AKC dogs out there and am concerned about making
sweeping generalizations in such a forum.

I disagree with you that the responsibility lies in the hands of the judges
to correct this wrong. I strongly believe it lies in the hands of the
breeders. Again, thankfully, it is a small minority of breeders who are
selling "show prospects" to that eager new person with no guidance, no
support, only making sure they get those "puppies back." I think that's
hurting this breed more than any judge. Hats off to the breeders who are
willing to go the extra mile and take the time to mentor new people in the
breed! :-)

Renee,

This may have been said before but as I certainly think you have hit it
directly on the head.

The people responsible for "putting" the mediocre dogs in the ring are most
certainly the BREEDERS. Not the novice owners, not the handlers and
certainly not the judges.

I find it hard to believe that the breeders have forgotten that they are
responsible for producing mediocre dogs. I find it hard to believe that if
they are that knowledgeable that they would willingly sell a mediocre dog to
anyone as a show prospect.

If someone sends you a bitch to be bred and she has no redeeming qualities
why not simply say "umm I don't think so I don't think even my dog wil
help." Why not restrict?

You have to be responsible about who you allow to be bred to your dogs, who
you sell to and definitely what you sell as a show prospect. Novice or not.

I don't see a lot of this being discussed here.

Fire away!
