Liz, you said it so well. Pro handlers are not the end all in dog showing. Some of them are smart enough and lucky enough to handle some REALLY great dogs, but most are out there with the mediocre ones put with them to finish. They can do quite a grooming job-to the extreme in most cases. I have met very few pro handlers who can keep the scissors off a "natural" dog. They know all the tricks to keep them looking natural. Many of those swell looking Cavaliers with handlers are quite trimmed-whether they say so or not. I still say, a great dog will succeed at all levels no matter who is at the end of the lead. During my Aussie's career, we rarely went home without a group placement, I would go in and size up the competition, worry about a few, and then I realized we were one of those to worry about!!! He was always owner handled, groomed, no artificial anything-it only takes a good dog.
