Hi Kim,
We have a spinner. He's a little neutered male pet that came back to us
after a divorce in his family. He didn't have the attention that he needed
and was in a crate or outside most of the time before he came back. When he
came back to us he didn't know how to relax when we held him. Very sad! He
is much improved!!! He is held a lot. The only time he chases his tail
these days is when he has to be quiet for a period of time for something
that he really doesn't enjoy such as nail clipping and grooming but I can
stop him immediately. Not with words though. I gently touch him and wag my
finger at him and then give him a favorite toy. He has a teddy bear that he
loves and takes to bed with him at night and he finds that peaceful at any
time. He also suffered from separation anxiety but is fine now, only crying
if he finds that everyone has gone inside and he is alone outside but that
ends immediately. I never used medication but found that actually gently
touching (not holding!) would always get his attention and then I could
always distract him. Some cases are worse than others, obviously, but I
don't think that leaving the room when he did this would have accomplished
anything positive. It's not a behavior that is attached to getting
attention in his case. It is a very sad thing if it cannot be controlled.
Fortunately we have been successful. I hope that you are as well.
