Glen,
We have 4 cavaliers that used to do the same thing. The new routine is to
throw toys or balls until they are ALL, out of breath while the other of us
cooks dinner. When dinner is called they roar into the house for a drink and
collapse under the table to breath. It is hard for a cavalier that is
catching his breath to beg effectively. No one, and I mean not even my
mother, is allowed in any way shape or form to feed or pet them when we are
sitting down to dinner. If they put there paws up on us to beg, we are not
allowed to even look at them as we place one of our feet on top of the hind
foot and gently press until they get off and then we still don't talk to them
or look at them. They must understand that the action is not acceptable
without being told. This is a hard thing to do but is well worth it in the
long run. I am happy to say after the rules were laid down 4 months ago we no
longer have beggars at our table.
Don't get me wrong they still receive little goodies but they are brought to
the kitchen and made to sit or lay or play dead for those very tiny scrapes
of food.
