Hi Brigitte

Do you have John Evans' book on Cavaliers? In it he tells you how to do a
punnett square for colour combinations to determine what you'll get.

Basics are - black and tan is dominant to all colours. Tricolour is
dominant to blenheim and ruby. Ruby is dominant to blenheim. Blenheim is
recessive to all colours.

Tricolours with a blen or ruby parent or who have produced a blen or rupy
puppy are always (genetic code) sisiEe. Rubies with a blen or tri parent or
who have produced a blen or tri puppy are always Ssi ee. B/ts with a blen
parent or who have produced a blen puppy are always Ssi Ee. B/ts with a
ruby parent may be either SS Ee or Ssi Ee, but if the other parent is a tri
or they have produced a tri puppy, always SS Ee. B/ts with a tri parent may
be either SS EE or Ssi Ee but if the other parent is a ruby or they have
produced a ruby puppy, they are always Ssi Ee. In the case of tris and b/ts
from two black parents and rubies and b/ts from two wholecolour parents, it
is necessary to breed from the dogs to work out their genotypes.

Blenheim - sisi ee
Tri carrying red - sisi Ee
Tri dominant black - sisi EE
Ruby carrying particolour - Ssi ee
Ruby dominant wholecolour - SS ee
B/t carrying red and parti - Ssi Ee
B/t dominant wholecolour carrying red - SS Ee
B/t dominant wholecolour and black carrying parti - Ssi EE
B/t dominant wholecolour and black - SS EE

Punnett square: tri carrying red (sisi Ee) to ruby carrying parti (Ssi ee).
Draw a square, divide in to four. Put sire (tri) over top, dam at side,
split gene code (I can't give the right sisi on my computer, as the i is
like the 2 in H2O, dropped down) thus:

                            sisi Ee

                     Ssi Ee sisi Ee

           Ssi ee

                     Ssi ee sisi ee

All four colours - but still no indication of where the white's going to
be!! And naturally this is just an indication of what it's possible to get -
nature might decide to give you all blenheims from that mating!

Best
