I don't know if anyone docks tails now. I have only known of one breeder who
mentioned that he had the tail docked on his dog, a Ruby. He said that he
did it for balance (to balance the look, is the way that I interpreted this
comment). BTW, this was not said to me. I was at an old club show in 1983
and overheard his comments to the person seated in front of me.

Since there must be two thirds of the tail left and you can only remove one
third, I have never bothered with this. Also, some bloodlines have a
naturally short tail and look docked when they are not. We occasionally get
this short (2/3 the average length) on wholecolors, but our wholecolors are
interbred with parti's so who knows where the genetics came in.

All the best,
Susan Cochran

Hi Leah,

Thanks for sharing the tail docking info. I know this is not an Aussie list,
but you brought up some stuff I had not heard. The tail article in Aussie
tTmes was pretty good. The tail on my newest Aussie was docked too short I
believe. It does not seem to be a problem, but I agree with leaving one or
two vertebrae. She was a shortened natural bob.

I really enjoy my Cavalier's tail after 16 years of tailless dogs! The
only dogs my dogs seem confounded by are black dogs and sometimes a breed
like the Old English where they can't see the eyes in either case.

So, I was so surprised a few years ago when I read that Cavaliers could have
their tails docked!!! Does anyone still practice this? I have seen tails
of diff lengths in the Cavalier. Are most of these natural? Do Cavalier
breeders have a tail length preference? Most (many) breeds with tails have a
specific length. The thing I love best about my Cavalier's tail is that it
drags the ground. The tail reaches his hock and the fur continues to the
ground. I don't know if this is desirable or preferred, but it sure is
beautiful!
