Dear Patricia,
In Massachusetts we have The Mass Federation of Dog Clubs
http://www.massfeddogs.org/ , many all breed dog clubs, parent clubs who
do a lot of public education and lobbying and there are also national
organizations which are similar to Mass Federation of Dog Clubs that
advocate for responsible treatment of animals. Often these
organizations are specific to breed; dog, cat, etc.
One National lobbying organization is THE ANIMAL COUNCIL, P.O. BOX 168,
MILLBRAE CA 94030. They publish an online alert about legislative
matters concerning animals and do a pretty good job of explaining the
proposed legislation. I particularly like the NAIA Trust
http://www.naiatrust.org/ because of their moderate stance on animal
welfare. Unfortunately, they are lately spending much of their time
fighting useless legislation such as the PPA. They are, from all I can
see about them, believers in sustainable resources, i.e. they don't
believe in banning hunting but rather in conserving species.
(Personally, I don't like hunting, don't permit it on my land, but
understand that starvation of deer populations is far worse than
hunting).
If you want to find a responsible and intelligent organization in animal
welfare, I would start by asking your all breed club who they support on
the state level. Then, of course, do your own thinking and digesting of
their material and methods.
