The joke is one of irony. The woman skipped her husband's funeral to go to a dog show. Unfortunately, there are many cases of misplaced priorities when a person is truly addicted to showing. Perhaps not this extreme, but it happens. I've seen lives totally consumed and homes destroyed by the "show" addiction. It is such a waste of life and one reason I've never enjoyed showing dogs. I had a fellow dog fancier call me once when we were getting ready to leave for my daughter's graduation and even after I explained, she was difficult to get away from.
Showing dogs can be like alcohol. Some people can enjoy a social drink occasionally or even frequently without drink destroying their lives and some people become alcoholics. It is all a matter of priorities.
