If you do have the best interests of the breed at heart I don't see why you
can't take what each club has to offer. I do sincerely wish we were joined
together but since that hardly seems likely I don't see why I can't belong to
both and enjoy all of the other exhibitors regardless of where they place
their loyalties. The common ground should be the betterment of the breed,
and neither club has an exclusive on that. When the division took place I
was very new in Cavaliers and had not formed any real alliances, though I was
asked to join the initial group. Because I was Chair of the very
controversial show that John Gammon was supposed to be judging and fighting
very hard to keep him when ordered to find another judge (they had been
charged but no formal action had yet been taken) I decided it would not be
wise to join at that time. By the time the dust had settled, the membership
was closed. Now that it has opened again, I fully intend to join. However,
even as a non-member I attended their National Specialties and even sat in on
their annual meetings. I was welcomed by most everyone there. You do not
need to be a member to participate and to learn.
As for serving 2 masters....I serve neither. I think for myself and fight
for what I believe. Serving any master implies you follow blindly. Isn't it
better to investigate all sides of an issue and make an informed decision
based on your own personal beliefs. Yes, I am very loyal to the CKCSC but
when the issue of accepting AKC dogs comes up for discussion I will be
fighting against my friends who think we should remain a closed organization
and I will be fighting with my AKC friends who don't want any part of the
CKCSC and trying to convince them that they do have something to gain by
competing in both venues.
