Virginia, The dog I told Sheila about was an American Eskimo Dog. The puppy was never in anyone's custody. The neighbor who found it insisted on keeping it while she put out signs as she was sure it belonged to someone in our neighborhood. She called the Vice President of our local AKC club who tried to contact the club's own rescue chair but she was unavailable so she called me. We decided to spread the word that the puppy had been found in case the owner or breeder was on one of the lists. Sure enough it was neighbors who came and reclaimed her. I would have grilled them about taking better precautions if we'd had custody, but we didn't.
