OK Kim!, Here's a new topic! :o) There was a case in Georgia this week that really points out the need for permanent identification of our dogs.
A black Lab escaped from it's back yard in an Atlanta suburb and ended up at someone's house a few blocks from where it lived. For ease of following along, I'll call the people who lost the dog the "Losers." As fate would have it, the house it showed up at thought it the dog was their long lost black Lab (that had been missing for about a year) returned home! I'll refer to these people as the "Finders." Of course, the dog had no identification of any kind...no ID tag, rabies, tag, microchip, no nothing. Anyway, the Losers found where the dog was, but the Finders refused to return him, sincerely believed the dog was theirs. A lawsuit insued. Luckily, the Losers had purchased the Lab from a breeder, who owned both the sire and the dam. The court ordered DNA testing. The results proved that the Losers were the true and legal owners of the dog. The dog was returned to the correct home and the Finders were ordered to pay all legal fees and the cost of the DNA testing. The Losers have now taken their dog and had him microchipped. Moral of the story....this kind of thing can and does happen. Make sure that you can prove your dogs actually belong to you!
