Cavaliers make wonderful service dogs for hearing ear, epilepsy detection.
I know of two, one is the sire of my foundation bitch. Ben "works" for a lady
with MS. He rides with her everywhere on her electric wheelchair. One time her
chair tipped over on the street and He satyed with her and consoled her untill
the ambulance arrived. She had a broken ankle. There was a write-up in the CKCS
Breedlines of the Dogs in Canada.
Another is a dog of my breeding who "works" for a lady who is a quadraplegic.
She acts as a go between in all public places. When the ladies first cavalier
died, she refused to go out and became quite depressed. Then she got her newest
one and now goes out daily to the mall.
As for dogs working for a living. A good work ethic is in the genes, I also
have Australian Shepherds. Nothing makes a dog, or a human feel more self worth
and satisfaction, then having a job to do. The fact you saw the dog panting
and looking tired might of been true. There is nothing wrong with that. My Cavaliers
look tired after a days work chasing birds, pestering the cat, or wrestling
with the aussies. They also look tired after a days work at dog shows, or doing
mall demos or running agility.
