A Peke is really a sort of genetic defect and it would be extremely
difficult to breed them. I suspect that it is actually a form of dwarfism.
Whenever a breed standard requires something that nature considers a
defect-- whether dwarfism, smashed in faces, or hairlessness, it brings all
sorts of additional problems to the table.
All the best,
Susan Cochran

Subject: [CKCS-L] Why Pekes? (Was Crufts)

> I have no affiliation with Pekes, but in response to the query 'why
Pekes?', I had the opportunity a couple of years ago to visit with a
long-time Peke breeder-owner who at that time had the top-ranked special in
the country. She explained to me that breeding a really magnificent Peke is
*extremely* difficult (and I mean more so than usual) due to structural
considerations, among other things, and that when such a dog comes into
being judges tend to recognize it accordingly. I have to say that having had
the chance to go over some of her dogs and puppies, I was smitten...to see
and touch high-quality Peke 'in person' is to appreciate one!
