Some people don't like Ivermectin which is the active ingredient in Heartguard. I have used it since it came out and never had a problem. It may depend on the bloodlines. I've known of some problems with my puppies and Sentinel or Intercept so I don't recommend either to my buyers and I would never use them on mine.
It is a catch 22. I'd rather not give my dogs any medication as a preventative, but we have to use something for heartworm preventative as heartworm is awful in the South. For us, the only medication that has had no side effects is Ivermectin.
