I've used liquid injectable Ivermectin as an oral preventative for heartworm
for years on my dogs. If you go this route, be sure to check the bottle you
purchase carefully as Ivermectin comes in different strengths. You want 1%
Ivermectin, which is sold for use in cattle and swine. At my local feed and
seed, a 50 mL bottle sells for approx. $50. The break down for livestock is
1cc per 110 pounds of body weight, so to dose a dog, the breakdown is 0.1 cc
per 11 pounds, which is a tiny amount. I use an insulin syringe to measure
the dosage for my dogs and squirt it into their mouths on the first of every
month. As I live in the deep southern part of the US, and mosquitos are a
constant concern here, I keep my dogs on heartworm preventative year around.

A single bottle of Ivermectin at $50 will last for a few years at my house of
13 dogs (the product does have an expiration date, so be sure to check the
bottle to see when it expires) and is a MUCH cheaper route than purchasing
Heartguard etc. at my vet's office. I purchased my last bottle at least 4
years ago, it's still 1/4 full and doesn't expire until April of 2003.
