This last weekend I went to an outdoor art fair. It was in the grass at a very large park on the lake. I saw many dogs there. I was glad to see this. There was one person with two children each had two dogs. I like to see dogs in the park attending social functions and spreading general good will. These folks walked down crowded isles forcing people to move or step on the dogs. The grumbling after they went through was not good. I am sure these folks thought they were welcome and so were their dogs but I thought the parting of the crowd for a gaggle of dogs was just a bit over the top. Nice idea but in reality wasn't very welcomed. Getting to the point: I was stopped by many people: young and old asking about my cavalier. I thought the attention was fabulous and so did the dog. I was amazed at how many said they owned a cavalier that was an import from our local large volume importer. I never saw the rest of the fair. I spent over two hours educating people on importation, health issues, how can I get my papers that were promised, potty training and where do I get good quality obedience training. I also received from these same people the statements that "I could never take my cavalier to a place like this" how do you get your dog to be so friendly ect. I am sure you get the message by now and I am now asking that all of you responsible folks who have wonderful dogs donate a day or two a year to get to some of these places where pet people go (not always dogs shows). The craving for knowledge is incredible. If enough responsible breeders were to bring one or maybe two dogs to outdoor functions and make it your personal commitment to this breed to educate the pet or potential pet owner about this breed they wouldn't go to the local newspaper or importer. It could be fun to do the local county fair with a friend and just do public service for a few hours. Do it for the betterment of the breed! Let them know the price you pay up front may not be the real cost of owning that pup off the bulletin board. As responsible breeders lets all try this for three years in a row.
