This is a good question. I hope here are lots of responses. My first option would be to let them keep the dog, neuter it, and replace it with a show quality puppy at no cost. The decision of whether they keep the puppy should be up to them. This is a real set back and emotional moment for most owners and I feel the best option is to allow them some choice in the matter and do what is best for the puppy. If their option is not to keep or place the puppy, then it should come back to the breeder.
If I was not expecting to have a show quality puppy for some time, then I might offer their money back. This is your reputation as a breeder that is at stake. The golden rule should apply. "Do unto others..." I have had this happen to me (not hearts but hips in another breed). The breeder handled it in such an honest and sensitive way that I felt no qualms about returning to this breeder and acquiring other dogs. In my own personal experience, I have only requested the return of the puppy and given money back, once, when I felt it was in the best interests of the dog. This was over another issue, not health. Now, having said all that ther are some exceptions. I would hope that anyone who is at the stage of buying a 'show" puppy in any breed would realize that breeding is not a perfected art and that sometimes "s--- happens" If they do not, then I would seriously consider just giving their money back and placing the puppy.
