Hello, Lynn,
I am more worried, at times, about the pups who leave here going to
obviously affluent families. One can interview for days, spend hours on
the phone and email and yet you don't know for whom the pup will be a
continual source of joy and for whom the pup grows up to be an
"accessory" to the gorgeous house with no true owner.
Brian Kilcommons (who is constantly recommending Cavsliers as a
wonderful family dog) tells a story about a training incident with a
Cavalier. He is paid the big bucks by the celebrities to come in and
train/teach them to train their dogs. He arrived at a gorgeous mansion
of (won't say the celebrity) who had a Cavalier waiting to be trained.
The owners weren't home. He went from butler to maid staff to kitchen
staff asking all to whom the beautiful dog belonged. The kitchen staff
allowed as how they were responsible for feeding and taking the dog
outside; some staff person took the dog to the groomer, but their WAS no
apparent "owner" in the family. The Cavalier was an accoutrement to "go
with" the mansion's furnishings.
He walked out and refused to work with the dog until an owner was
identified.
So, if I find a superb loving home who cannot manage to meet my prices
(which are otherwise on the low side here), I'd consider trying to do
whatever I could to make it possible for them to afford it. I would
worry about how they would manage to afford veterinary care, but so long
as they had it well planned out, I would do my best to accomodate them.
I am leary of those for whom an animal is another novelty in a long
string of novelties........
We will never be big enough breeders to help all who come our way who
are good homes. We keep things small here.
And, frankly, I already know that I'll never get back what I spend on my
dogs. But I don't expect to do that and never did; this is for the love
of it.
Best,
Suze
