Hi Robin and List, When I heard that people >were trying out the prepared BARF food, I bought the >combo patties. My Teddy (7+ mos old) will not touch >it. Try lightly cooking these patties. Maybe he'll like them that way.
I'm in the process of figuring out how to do my >own batch food prep and freezing in meal-size >portions, but in the meantime, I'm reading EVERYTHING, >and feeding what Teddy will eat (canidae kibble + raw >chicken wings + yogurt + fruit/veggie mash). Be sure to read sources that do NOT advocate the BARF method of feeding. For example Wendy Volhard's "The Holistic Guide to a Healthy Dog." And Juliette Barcoli-Levy's (I know I spelled this wrong) book was the originator of the home prepared diet, followed by "Collins Guide to Canine Nutrition" and Volhard's books. The BARF concept, although getting the most attention, is not the only home feeding approach. And, frankly, I'm not enamored of it. I think it's too high in bones and meat. Even my holistic vet says that grains are not a bad thing - they provide lots of nutrients that meat does not. I've been feeding raw based diets for 20 years, way before Billinghurst was on the scene. >Here is my question: From what I am reading on >various BARF sites/lists (the books are on order), >letting a dog eat kibble when also feeding raw is NOT >good. What I'm reading on *this* list is that a lot >of you combine kibble with raw. Could you direct me >to some reading somewhere that refutes the BARF >argument that combining these is not good Probably no such documentation; however, my take on this is by combining kibble and raw, especially if you only feed raw meat, is that you are upsetting the nutritional balance of the diet. Therefore, if you want to combine a kibble diet with a raw foods diet, I would suggest that you feed the two separately, i.e., Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun - kibble, Tues, Thurs, Sat, raw. Be sure to mix organ meats with muscle meats, along with a wide range of fruits/veggies sources. And I also recommend adding grains, either premixed like Soljourner Farms, or oatmeal (I pour boiling water over it, let it sit overnight and fead with the breakfast meal). There are dog foods out that are designed to be mixed with raw foods, another way to go. Also, the BARF feeders would have you believe that grains are a very bad thing. Not necessarily so. Some dogs need grains others don't do well on them. You have to experiment. But be sure to read several different sources on home prepared diets, not just the BARF advocates.
