The 8% hereditary eye defects is from the Canine Eye Registration Foundation, calculated from statistics from the 1000 or so cavaliers tested by ophthalmologists each year. I imagine the percentage affected is really higher, as theoretically, breeders that aren't testing at all would have a higher percentage of affected cavaliers. You can join the CERF for about $25 or $35 a year, or the club can join for $75. When you join you get all the statistics for a chosen breed; second sets of breed statistics cost $10. If there is any particular eye condition that interests you, I would be happy to check on it for you and give you the exact #s for the years I have.
Epilepsy figures for purebred dogs in general are about 4%. Notice in my quote it says "all dogs", because I don't have a figure specifically for cavaliers. (The post was for Kelly's benefit -- trying to catch her before she signed off.) Percentages vary depending on the population studied. Epilepsy is reported in 2.3% of dogs seen at veterinary teaching hospitals, 17% in a survey of Belgian Tervurens. A higher-than-normal incidence has been reported in the beagle, border collie, boxer, cocker spaniel, collie, dachshund, German shepherd, golden retriever, poodle, Saint Bernard, shetland, Siberian husky, springer spaniel, Welsh corgi, and wirehaired fox terrier. It is not common in dobermans or sight hounds. In the last survey of Japanese Chin, the reported incidence was between 3 and 4%. Most clubs do surveys, but I don't know of any done by any of the cavalier clubs. The hip dysplasia figure came from OFA a few years back. Has anyone called OFA recently to see if there has been any improvement?
