Pam, My puppies seem to tell me themselves. When they start leaving part of one or both meals I usually switch to once a day. Usually that happens about 7 - 9 months. I make sure they are getting as much as in two feedings and for a while I give them a biscuit for the first feeding time as I feed at night.
