The only bad tear stains my Cavalier has had were caused by yeast. I suspected yeast by the smell and asked the vet to confirm it. She was a little reluctant, but it is so easy to diagnose. I was right. I treated it with triple antibiotic ointment twice a day for a few days. Just wipe a little down the stained area. The smell is gone within a day. Tear stains clean up well with Witch Hazel.
