Hi Diane, I don't think that Olive Oil would harm your dogs, however, I don't think it would be of much benefit either other than to add a healthy fat to the diet. While Olive oil is a good oil (low in monosatuturated fat), it isn't the same as Flax or fish oil that are known as Omega 3, or essential fatty acids. In humans it has been found that the highest degree of heart disease is in people with the lowest levels of Omega 3 oils. In Japan where heart disease rates are low, fish , steamed vegetables and rice are their dietary staples. Omega 3 oils are thought to help lower cholesterol (garlic helps with this as well). The most economical way to supplement EFA's is with the liquid oils that you can purchase at the health food store. Barleen's is an excellent brand and make a Flax Seed oil especially for dogs. You simply pour a bit (1/2 tsp for a smalll dog like a Cavalier)over their food.
