There is a very good free download programme at www.grisoft.com
called AVG. As far as I can tell it does pretty much everything, does a pre-boot scan, checks everything in and out, runs daily/weekly tests, lets you know when it needs updating, etc. Was recommended to me by the very nice young man whose mother I am old enough to be who had to reinstall all my stuff when I mucked my computer up by frantically deleting files with a particular designation because I was convinced they'd come from a virus ... luckily I think he likes his mother ...
