Laura,
This is not to be taken personally, however you gave an example," if you
breed 100 dogs which results in 10 winning, healthy dogs." Let me set the
record straight: I am a small breeder who started with a goal to make a
difference in the health and type of wholecolors. I studied the breed by
attending shows, speaking with breeders, attending health, structure and
judging seminars, and purchased a puppy from a breeder who had health tested
prior to breeding plus had old champion bloodlines. I have been in the fancy
for 8 years and breeding/showing for 5. I breed to the best that will
compliment my bitch, who is health tested, and provide historical, health
information 3 generations back. I have had 2 out of 4 in first
litter DOA. They were not better than my bitch so they went to a pet home
and required to spay and neuter. Given their pedigree,a number of people had
suggested they should be on co-ownership for breeding so I could have more
breeding options; I chose not to. My 2nd litter had 5 with one DOA. I had
a c-section to save her other 4 puppies because of uterine inertia. My vet
suggested spaying her and I agreed it was in her best interest to do so. I
placed two in pet homes and ran 2 on. They won or placed in their classes
and were health tested by specialist before being bred at 21/2. I kept 4
out of 6 in one litter and 2 out of 4 in another with no whelping problems
from either bitch.
I added a black & tan male who came from health tested parents and
grandparents with a famous producer of English champion bloodlines behind
him. So with careful attention to detail and health, I have produced 16
puppies with 5 out of 16 winning or placing in their class under stiff
CKCSC, USA competition with only 3 shows a year. My foundation dogs are show
quality and healthy who also produce healthy show dogs so... it can be done
without massive breeding if you educate yourself first and aim for quality
not quantity. Breeding is a slow, sometimes painful, process but I strive to
make a difference to benefit the breed.

I thought I would share my experience so people on the list don't think I
produce lots of puppies to produce a few healthy show dogs. This is in
reponse to your email to Rod about producing healthy show dogs and how
easy it is to achieve when you mass produce.
