Holiday season is coming. The pet breeders association, the pet stores and the commercial kennels are all hoping for a huge season. Recent articles in industry magazines have discussed their great expectations for the season. We need to show them that their industry is about to end and they should find other employement. A direct hit at their bottom line this holiday season will go a long way toward their ultimate demise. We have to educate the public about the mills and tell them not to buy a dog at a pet store. The time to act is now. We have two action items this week. First, HUA has created a new ad opposing commercial kennels. It prints on one 8.5 x 11 page in color. Everyone who has seen it has said it's very powerful. We are asking for everyone to print this ad and hang copies everywhere - on bulletin boards in businesses, libraries, post offices, grocery stores. Put stacks of them at doctor's offices, vet offices. Put a flyer on the desk of every employee where you work. Put them on car windows in parking lots where there are pet stores in the malls. If you can afford it, run an ad in your local papers. You can print it and give it to your newspaper or give it to them on disk. They can make it larger or smaller. Advertisement prices are very low right now because of the slowing economy. You can negotiate some very good prices for newspaper ads. We have to reach as many people as possible. Her column is the most widely syndicated column in the world. When she speaks millions listen. If we could get her to write a column about the horrors of the mills, it could make a huge difference. Please take a few minutes and email Dear Abby and ask her to help the dogs suffering in the mills. Tell her about the hundreds of thousands of dogs in commercial kennels who live their lives in misery and who never have a good holiday. Tell her about the families who suffer because the cute little puppy they bought dies of disease or suffers from a genetic defect that costs hundreds of dollars. Ask her to tell the public that puppymills do exist and people should adopt a dog in need or buy from a reputable breeder. She should tell the public that the only way a family can be certain that they are not contributing to the misery of mills is by seeing the parents of the puppy they want to buy and seeing conditions of the place where the parents live. They cannot believe the people who work in pet stores - they have to see the parents for themselves. This will only take a few minutes of your time.
