It has nothing to do with class and everything to do with couples who play out the stereotype of "he makes the money and she spends it." There are people who do this same dance even when both work and make comparable money. She buys things and hides them from her husband. He carries on about wasting money on a damn dog/cat. It's tedious and predictable. Maybe that's why they stick to the script.
