Eye defects. I read with interest the test procedures followed by some. The explanation of testing the entire litter is what I do in the aussies. To only test the show prospects will come back to haunt you soon enough. I drive 5 hours one way for heart or eye tests. On the rare occasion there will be an eye clinic localy, but so often not when I need it... There is information out on the web, but unfortunately there are no definitive answers to some of my questions. Such as determining the eye status of a dog by test breeding. I know dirty word to some..
Tri colours with heavy markings...I can live with that sooner then perfection fo markings and lacking in any area from health to form. There are no perfect dogs. But I think removal of health issues is the number one concern. Whole colours and defects, again has everything to do with limiting the gene pool based on colour alone. Have seen the same thing in other breeds where certain diseases have even become colour associated. I have sold pups into homes where the people both work. (how else can they afford the price and care of a dog?) Have advocated having a dog walker in to let the dog out at noon especially the first year. Most people schedule their two weeks holidays to accomodate the new family members introduction. I have had not one single problem with any dogs home alone in 20 + years. During the pre purchase interveiw, I determine if the people are willing to spend the time needed, Cavaliers are not as demanding as aussies. But still dogs all need a job to do, even if it is supervision of the street from the window. When I had my grooming shop, I offered doggy day care. One memorable dog was a Fila Braziliaro. Rocco was a nice dog and we became friends when he was 10 weeks old. He still recognizes me and I get the royal treatment from all 180 pounds of him. And horrors, he played with my Cavaliers. He was quite gentle and Rosie taught him small dog manners right from the start. Different breed for sure. Regardless, it realy hinges ion the level of comitment from the purchaser. One family came out and made numerous visits to see the litter of aussies, picked their pup and took him home. After two weeks I got a call that they realized they had made a mistake and could they bring him back. I refunded their money without a word. Better now then in 2 years. I do offer a lifetime take back and have taken back a dog as old a 5. Leah Swatko Ministik reg.
